Year 1 were delighted to have the opportunity to meet and handle some real tortoises when Mrs Millard (mother of Jemima in Year 3) kindly brought her two pet tortoises, Rocky and Shelley, into school this week. These tortoises are only thirteen years old and were both lively and entertaining. They genuinely move at an impressive speed! The children learned so much by being able to observe these fascinating creatures close up and were keen to ask questions about their diet and habits. We were all interested to learn that they are called ‘spur thigh’ tortoises and that they only eat vegetables or salad foods, not fruit. We were also curious to know why Shelley and Rocky were not hibernating in the middle of winter!
